Fall is, without a doubt, my favorite season. There’s something about the crisp air, the vibrant colors of changing leaves, and the cozy feeling of bundling up that makes this time of year so special. As the temperatures drop, I find myself reaching for certain items that have become my fall essentials—things that keep me warm, comfortable, and ready to fully embrace the season. Today, I’m sharing the five things I can’t live without during fall, along with why they’re such staples in my wardrobe and lifestyle.
1. Sweaters and Sweatshirts: A Fall Wardrobe Must-Have
I believe you can never have too many sweaters and sweatshirts during fall. Whether it’s an oversized knit sweater or a comfy, well-worn hoodie, nothing says cozy like pulling on a warm top. I love how versatile they are—you can layer them over a simple shirt or pair them with jeans or leggings. The options are endless, and the soft, thick fabrics provide a much-needed barrier against the cool air. The best part? Sweaters and sweatshirts come in so many styles, from chunky knits to lightweight pullovers, making it easy to adapt to the fluctuating temperatures that fall brings. Whether I’m out running errands or curling up with a book, a sweater is always the perfect choice.
My go-to place recently for oversized hoodies and sweaters has been Amazon. I love how affordable the options are, and their return policy makes it super convenient if something doesn’t work out. That said, I also swear by Penningtons and Old Navy. Penningtons, while on the pricier side and focused on plus sizes, offers great quality and a range of cozy styles. Old Navy, on the other hand, is more reasonably priced and carries a wide variety of sizes—though finding them in-store can be hit or miss. Overall, I find Amazon to be the easiest and most budget-friendly option, especially with how quickly the cooler weather sneaks up on me.
2. Leggings: The Perfect Pairing
When it comes to comfort, leggings are a fall essential for me. Not only are they warm, but they’re also incredibly versatile and comfortable, making them the perfect go-to for casual outings or lounging at home. I love pairing them with oversized sweaters or tunic-length tops for a relaxed yet put-together look. Plus, they’re perfect for layering under dresses or skirts if you want a little extra warmth without sacrificing style. Leggings are also great for those chilly mornings when you need something cozy but don’t want the stiffness of jeans. In fall, they allow for flexibility, whether I’m lounging indoors or taking a brisk walk outside.
Penningtons and Old Navy have always been good options for leggings, but with their prices, I started looking for more affordable alternatives. Recently, I found a really nice pair on Amazon that I absolutely love. They’re about half the price of Old Navy leggings, and so far, the quality seems just as good. It’s been a great find for adding more leggings to my fall wardrobe without breaking the bank.
3. Scarves: Stylish and Functional
No fall wardrobe is complete without a collection of scarves. I love how scarves not only keep me warm but also add a pop of color or texture to my outfits. Whether it’s a chunky knit scarf for those extra-cold days or a lightweight, patterned one for a breezy afternoon, scarves are an easy way to elevate any fall look. I tend to gravitate toward neutral shades, but I also enjoy mixing in some autumnal colors like deep reds, oranges, and earthy browns to match the season’s palette. Scarves are perfect for layering, and they can be styled in so many different ways, whether draped over your shoulders or wrapped snugly around your neck.
I have to admit, I’m seriously addicted to scarves, but I only wear them during the fall and winter. My collection is already close to 15 scarves, yet I’m always on the lookout for new ones to add. There’s just something about wrapping up in a cozy scarf that makes the cooler months even better!
4. Ankle Boots and Thick Socks: Cold-Weather Companions
As the temperatures drop, I reach for my favorite pair of ankle boots. Not only are they stylish, but they also allow me to wear thicker socks, which is a must as the days grow colder. Up here, where the weather can be unpredictable, ankle boots strike the perfect balance between comfort and practicality. They keep my feet warm without feeling too heavy, and they’re versatile enough to wear with anything—whether it’s jeans, leggings, or even dresses. The ability to wear thicker socks makes them my go-to during fall, ensuring that my feet stay toasty even on the coldest mornings.
Since it’s not quite cold enough for winter boots but also not warm enough for runners or sneakers most days, I find that ankle boots are the perfect in-between option. They keep my feet warm without making them too hot or uncomfortable, striking just the right balance for the changing fall weather.
5. Blankets: The Ultimate Cozy Essential
Fall wouldn’t be complete without an abundance of blankets. Whether I’m snuggling up on the couch with a good book or watching a movie on a rainy evening, having a soft, warm blanket is essential. I love keeping a few different blankets on hand, from plush throws to chunky knits, so I can always have something cozy to wrap up in. There’s something so comforting about the feeling of being enveloped in a blanket when it’s chilly outside. Plus, blankets are perfect for adding a cozy, inviting touch to any room, draped over a couch or chair, ready to be used whenever the need for warmth arises.
As a big reader, I love when the weather starts to cool down because it’s the perfect excuse to curl up with a blanket and dive into a good book. During this time of year, I also get a lot of use out of my Oodie—it’s always so cozy and adds that extra layer of comfort while I read.
Fall is all about embracing the little comforts in life, and for me, these five essentials—sweaters, leggings, scarves, ankle boots, and blankets—help me do just that. They keep me warm and cozy while still allowing me to enjoy everything this beautiful season has to offer. Whether I’m out enjoying the brisk autumn air or staying in for a quiet evening, these items make fall feel even more magical. What are your fall essentials? Let me know in the comments!
