How I Prep My Reading List for Summer

There’s something about summer reading that just feels different.

Maybe it’s the longer days stretching into soft evenings, the way the light lingers just a little longer, or how a good book somehow feels even better when paired with fresh air and something cold to sip on.

Whatever it is, my reading habits always shift when summer rolls around—and because of that, I don’t just wing it when it comes to my summer TBR.

I prep for it.

Not in a strict, over-planned kind of way—but in a way that feels intentional, seasonal, and still flexible enough to follow my mood.

Over time, I’ve found a rhythm that helps me build a summer reading list that I’m genuinely excited about—and one I actually stick to.

I Start with the Feeling I Want

Before I even look at my shelves or scroll through my e-reader, I pause and ask myself:

What do I want my reading life to feel like this summer?

Because for me, reading is just as much about the experience as it is about the books themselves.

Some summers, I crave:

  • Light, small-town romances

  • Easy, bingeable stories I can fly through in an afternoon

  • Books that feel like a mini escape without asking too much of me

Other times, I find myself wanting:

  • Slower, more emotional reads

  • Stories that linger a little longer

  • A mix of light and depth to balance the season

Starting here helps me avoid building a list based on hype or pressure—and instead create one that actually matches where I am in life.

I “Shop” My Shelves First

Before adding anything new, I always start with what I already own.

This step has become a bit of a ritual for me—pulling books off my shelves, scrolling through my e-books, and rediscovering titles I’ve completely forgotten about.

I look for:

  • Books I picked up earlier in the year with summer in mind

  • Covers, settings, or vibes that feel warm and seasonal

  • Authors I already know I love and want to return to

There’s something really satisfying about realizing you already have the perfect book waiting for you.

And honestly, it keeps my list from getting out of control.

I Build Around My Seasonal Reading Life

Summer for me isn’t something I jump into all at once—it’s something I ease into once it officially begins in late June. Instead of flipping my entire reading list overnight, I let things shift gradually based on what I’m naturally reaching for, what kinds of stories fit that warmer, slower energy, and how my actual life is unfolding.

A big part of that includes a seasonal readathon I host each summer, which officially begins on July 1st. I already have my books chosen for it, but I don’t treat it like the only focus of my reading month. Instead,

I use it as a framework—matching books I already own to prompts early on, adjusting things as the start date gets closer, and keeping everything flexible so it still feels fun rather than restrictive.

If you want more details, I’ll be sharing everything closer to the start date over on the blog, and you can also check out previous readathons over on my YouTube channel if you’re curious about how I like to structure them and what past summers have looked like.

By building my summer reading this way—slowly, intentionally, and grounded in how I actually live the season—it stops feeling like a strict plan and starts feeling like a rhythm I get to fall into.

I Think in Reading Moments, Not Just Books

One thing that’s really changed how I build my reading list is thinking about when and how I’ll actually be reading.

Summer reading isn’t all one vibe—it’s a mix of moments.

So instead of just picking books, I pair them with experiences:

  • A light romance for a sunny afternoon outside

  • A cozy read for quieter evenings

  • Something immersive for those rare, uninterrupted reading days

  • A quick, easy book for busy weeks when time is limited

I Build a Mini TBR for Road Trips & Camping

For me, summer also means road trips and camping.

There’s something about being on the road, watching the scenery change, or settling into a quiet campsite at the end of the day that makes reading feel even more special. Because of that, I create a small, intentional TBR specifically for those travel moments.

These aren’t random picks—they’re books I know I’ll actually want with me.

I usually choose:

  • A couple of easy, addictive reads for long travel days

  • Something light and fun for reading outside in the sun

  • A cozy, slower-paced book for evenings at camp

  • And a comfort read I can always fall back on

I don’t overpack this list. I keep it small and purposeful, so every book I bring actually gets its moment.

There’s something really special about tying books to places like that—like remembering exactly what you were reading while sitting by a fire or watching the sky change over a long drive.

It makes the stories feel like part of the journey itself.

I Balance Light Reads with a Little Depth

As much as I love a good fluffy romance (and summer is perfect for them), I’ve learned I enjoy my reading more when there’s a bit of variety.

Too many light reads in a row, and I start to lose interest.

So I intentionally mix in:

  • A few emotionally deeper stories

  • One or two longer or slower-paced books

  • Something slightly outside my usual comfort zone

Not enough to overwhelm myself—but just enough to keep things interesting.

I Plan for Mood Shifts

If there’s one thing I know about myself as a reader, it’s this:

My mood will change.

So instead of fighting that, I plan for it.

I make sure my list includes:

  • Different subgenres

  • Different pacing

  • Different emotional tones

That way, no matter what kind of reading day I’m having, I have something that fits.

And that alone has helped me avoid so many reading slumps.

I Leave Room for the Unexpected

No matter how much I plan, I never fill my entire reading list.

Because summer always brings a few surprises:

  • A book that suddenly feels perfect out of nowhere

  • A recommendation I can’t ignore

  • A mood shift that changes everything

I usually leave a good portion of my TBR open—just enough space to be spontaneous.

It keeps reading from feeling boxed in and reminds me that it’s okay to follow where my curiosity goes.

I Let My Reading Reflect the Season

As the summer moves along, my reading naturally shifts with it.

Early summer tends to feel lighter and more energetic.

Mid-summer is a mix of everything.

And by late summer, I start reaching for slightly cozier, more grounded reads that hint at the transition into fall.

I don’t force this—it just happens. But being aware of it helps me build a list that evolves instead of staying static.

I Make It Feel Like Something to Look Forward To

More than anything, I want my reading list to feel exciting.

Not overwhelming. Not like a task. Not like something I have to get through.

Sometimes that means:

  • Writing it out in a notebook

  • Creating a simple tracker

  • Pairing certain books with specific reading spots or snacks

  • Or just mentally labeling them with little “vibes”

It doesn’t have to be elaborate—it just has to feel personal.

Prepping my summer reading list isn’t about being perfectly organized or reading as many books as possible.

It’s about creating a reading experience that fits the season I’m in.

One that feels easy, intentional, and a little bit magical in its own quiet way.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about how many books I read—it’s about how they make me feel while I’m reading them.
